NILSHI RYLA

Date: 13th October, 2017

Set in the Sahyadri mountains of Maharashtra, the quaint little village of Nilshi is a zen of peace and solace, a place where one feels the very essence of Mother Nature. It is home to the YMCA International lakeside campsite which plays host to the Rotaract Club of Caduceus. Having witnessed the beauty of this place, it is almost impossible to believe that something so serene and pure can breed disaster for human life- a potential healthcare abomination. The project commenced on 13th of October 2017 and ended on the 15th of October 2017.

This was a huge project so we made teams PR team, Volunteer training team, Health camp organising team, Coordinators team and counsellors team to make sure that camp would face no problems at all. We contacted the manager at YMCA Lakeside Camp, Nilshi, Lonavala and arrangements were made for food and accomodation for our volunteers.

On 13th November, volunteers boarded a bus from Sion station at 6.30 am.We took a break at Panvel and volunteers were provided with hot breakfast. The volunteers were alloted their work stations, were told about our past experineces at Nilshi and the rules that need to be followed.

A camp was set up at Nilshi primiary school and the kids were screened with our routine health examination. In the same campus, the adults were also screened. Their head to toe general examination was done followed by counselling on their risk factors, suspected conditions, home management for their condition. The indicated cases were referred to physiotherapists present at the camp who taught them general home exercise programmes specific to their condition, gave them ergonomic modifications and assessed and treated patients for their acute symptoms.

After the camp ended, the volunteers were felicitated by the school authorities with hand made bouquets made by the kids. The volunteers made the kids sing songs and dance after the camp. By evening we winded up the camp and the volunteers headed to their accomodation spot at YMCA, Nilshi riding on the roof of the bus witnessing the beauty and serenity of the village.

Our volunteers then escorted to their rooms at the campsite wherein they rested for an hour or two and then left for a village visit with the medical social servant. Volunteers visited various houses and spoke to the villagers to gather information on their lifestyle, their problems, to know what we can help them with. Post dinner, at midnight, club president Rtr. Vidhi Dave called a meeting wherein all the information gathered from volunteers through the village visit was noted down, problems and possible solutions were discussed.

Suggestions on improvement of camps being held, new ideas etc were discussed in the meeting. Work allocation for Day 2 camp was done.  The volunteers roamed out at nights within the campsite, played cards and board games, bonded well and started knowing each other well. Volunteers witnessed a beautiful sunrise and clicked tons of pictures.

On day 2, the day started with breakfast after which all headed to Khandi for yet another medical camp. As discussed in the meeting, the villagers were asked to enlist their 2 most serious problems in their living. After reaching the campsite post camp, the volunteers stayed in tents , played games, had discussions to know more about each other , bonded, learnt life lessons. The seniors in the club brainstormed the volunteers about the kind of work Caduceus does and insisted them to be a part of our activities.

On day 3, volunteers freshened up early in the morning for a morning trail led by the campsite manager and conducted health camps in night dresses with coats on for the staff members at Campsite after their return from the trek. Later, they had their breakfast and assembeled for various activitues like rock climbing, archery, bonding games etc. Later, they went on for Kayaking and swimming in 120 feet deep water body with life jackets on.

After we were back from Nilshi, a team was built to work upon the various aspects covered at the camps. Electricity, water supply and accesibiliy to healthcare facilities being the need of the hour in the village, the caduceus has stepped forward to find out solutions for these issues.

The volunteers thoroughly enjoyed and learnt a lot from the camp with onfield rural healthcare learning sessions.

The volunteers were then interested to be a part of the club after knowing about its activities. The villagers , manager of campsite and the medical workers were very grateful for all the work done by the rotaractors of the Caduceus. RCBC was amazed by the work our volunteers do. It was an eyeopener for all our volunteers to be able to witness a different form of lifestyle
