Antilitter Campaign – 1 @Garbett Point
Date: 20th July, 2017
The existence of mankind is threatened daily by environmental setbacks in the world. The setbacks differ country by country. The one thing we do have in common is that it is all up to mankind to preserve and maintain the beauty of the places we chose to live in.
The project was carried out in support of project VAARSA which was basically a cleanup drive across various mountains in Maharashtra, an initiative by RC Pune Warje, RID 3131.
Being the first project under the anti-litter campaign, the idea was to serve the community, save the nature as well as enjoy doing that, and to encourage participation in this noble cause and improve health by indulging into the most interesting sport- TREKKING. Garbett point was decided as a venue as it had become one of the popular dumping grounds of the area which needed hasty restoration.
The trek began with an introduction session amongst the volunteers, they were also told about the antilitter campaign to which majority agreed to lend out their support and service. At the summit, after an ascend of 5 hours, participants had lunch , clicked pictures on mountain tops and danced to various tunes and in no time became a family.
On the way back, the volunteers collected waste materials in disposable garbage bags and were then unloaded in the garbage tins of Matheran Railway Station, thereby contributing to the cleanliness of the community. Various slogans were recited on the way back to promote awareness amongst the onlookers.
It was an intense trek but totally worth it. We came home proud with our heads held high. It was well appreciated by the people and it also made headlines in the local newspapers. The cleanup drive was inspired and conucted to support the Swatchh Bharat Abhiyan- An initiative by our very own Prime Minister- Mr. Narendra Modi.
